At least 23 children and two teachers were killed when a school bus plunged 328 feet into a gorge in Himachal’s Malkwal yesterday. Kangra district officials fear the death toll may rise as 11 other children have been injured in the accident. The bus belonging to the Wazir Ram Singh Pathania private school had left the campus at around 3pm. It had barely covered 6km when the driver is believed to have lost control of the bus, resulting in the fatal plunge. Read more

Kidambi Srikanth will become the No. 1 player on Thursday, when the Badminton World Federation (BWF) releases its weekly rankings. Justice J Chelameswar, the seniormost judge in the Supreme Court after the CJI, has raised serious questions on elevation of high court judges to the top court. “Assessment of performance of high court judges is hardly done. Generally, impressions go as assessment,” Justice Chelameswar said. His demand for recording of the collegium’s proceedings is in line with his dissenting order as member of the five-judge bench, which in October 2015 struck down the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act.

The Centre has inked a Rs 639 crore deal for 1.86 lakh new bullet-proof jackets for Army’s ordinary infantry soldiers. The Army said the major contract for procurement of 1,86,138 bullet-proof jackets (BPJs) has been signed with domestic private company SMPP Pvt. Ltd after successful conduct of stringent field evaluation trials. As per the contract, SMPP will start the supply of the BPJs within the next few months and complete the entire order within a period of three years.
Axis Bank chief Shikha Sharma will step down in December 2018- two-and-a-half years before her term was due to end. The announcement came after the Reserve Bank of India raised questions on the board’s proposal to appoint her for a fourth term from July 2018. On December 8, 2017, the board had informed the RBI of its decision to reappoint Sharma as MD and CEO for three more years from June 1, 2018.
