Mumbai came to a standstill after heavy rainfall. The Maharashtra government and civic authorities sounded high alert as torrential rains lashed Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and other parts of the state for the fourth consecutive day, severely affecting normal life and paralysing the lifelines — local train and bus services — in the state capital. The state government has requisitioned the services of five disaster management teams, including three from Pune, to tackle any eventuality in Mumbai.

PM Modi will travel to Xiamen in China to attend the BRICS summit. The summit will be held from September 3-5. The announcement of Modi’s visit comes a day after India and China ended their 73-day standoff in Dokalam by withdrawing their troops from the area. From China, the Prime Minister will travel to Myanmar for a state visit from September 5 to 7 at the invitation of Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw.
Rabri Devi and son Tejashwi were quizzed by income tax department. The two were questioned by the income tax department for over an hour in connection with its alleged benami assets probe against them and others in land deals worth Rs 1,000 crore. The department had earlier questioned Lalu Prasad’s MP daughter Misa Bharti and her husband Shailesh Kumar in this case. Benami properties are those in which the real beneficiary is not the one in whose name the property has been purchased.

Javelin thrower Jhajharia is the only Indian to win two Paralympic gold medals — 2004 Athens Games and 2016 Rio Paralympics — while star mid-fielder Sardar has been the architect of India hockey team’s many victories in the last few years.
Vishal Sikka’s wife Vandana quit Infosys Foundation today. Vandana was the chairperson of Infosys Foundation, USA and served the organisation for two and a half years. Infosys Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the IT services company. Vishal Sikka had quit Infosys earlier this month. The Infosys board and Sikka both cited Murthy’s constant bickering and allegations as the reason behind the drastic decision.

Indian troops can swiftly intervene if China attempts to build a road at Doklam again. Indian troops are now once again in a militarily advantageous position at their Doka La outpost on the Sikkim border, having almost completed their withdrawal from the face-off site. The Niti Aayog has proposed increasing penalty for polluting industrial units from Rs 1 lakh to minimum Rs 5 crore. It also proposed fine up to Rs 20 crore and imprisonment for life in cases of causing damage to larger areas. The enhanced penalties will replace the drastic step of closing down an unit. The law ministry’s has given its nod to the proposal, but the environment ministry has not yet put it before the Union Cabinet for clearance.
Ram Rahim acted like a wild beast, special CBI judge Jagdeep Singh said while sentencing the Dera chief. He committed breach of gravest nature by sexually assaulting his gullible and blind followers and deserves no mercy, the judge said. The Dera chief was handed two 10-year jail terms, to run consecutively, for his convictions in two rape cases.

A 5-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court declared triple talaq unconstitutional with a 3:2 majority. Three of the judges agreed, triple talaq was not sanctioned by Quran and hence could not form part of the fundamental right to the religion of Muslims. The other judges, even while holding triple talaq to be valid, ordered a stay on this practice for six months to enable legislature bring a law banning this practice. Read

19 MLAs loyal to the Dhinakaran-Sasikala camp have withdrawn support to the Palaniswami government in Tamil Nadu. They conveyed their decisions to the state governor C Vidyasagar Rao in individual letters. They said that the government has betrayed the trust of the people. This comes a day after the OPS and EPS factions of AIADMK merged, and speculations are rife of Sasikala being removed as party general secretary.

The CBI has filed chargesheet against former RJD MP Shahabuddin in the killing of journalist Rajdeo Ranjan. Shahabuddin, currently lodged in Tihar, has been charged under IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy and murder and provisions of Arms Act. Bihar Police had charged six persons in the case before the probe was taken over by CBI. Shahabuddin is facing trial in more than 45 criminal cases.

Supreme Court will pronounce its verdict on the constitutional validity of triple talaq today. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar had reserved its verdict on May 18 after a six-day marathon hearing during the summer vacation. Centre had told the bench that it will come out with a law to regulate marriage and divorce among Muslims if ‘triple talaq‘ is held invalid and unconstitutional by the apex court.

Government is planning to replace physical verification for passport with online verification. Verification will be done using a link to the newly-created national database on crimes of criminals. The national database was rolled out on Monday as part of the home ministry’s Crime and Criminal Tracking Networks and Systems (CCTNS) initiative. The Digital Police portal e-integrates the country’s 15,398 police stations and allows citizens to report crime and request antecedents verification online.
PM Modi will roll out more than 9,500 road projects in Rajasthan on August 29. The PM is scheduled to visit Udaipur next week to lay foundation stones for projects as well as inaugurate some. The projects, over 3,000 kilometres, will include national highways, state roads and rural roads under PMGSY and Rajasthan’s flagship programmes. These will altogether cost over Rs 27,000 crore and are being funded by the road transport ministry and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Donald Trump has warned that the US will not tolerate Pakistan’s offering ‘safe havens’ to extremists. Trump suggested that military and other aid to Washington’s nuclear-armed ally is at stake if it does not clamp down on extremism. “Pakistan has much to gain from partnering with our effort in Afghanistan. The US burger chain McDonald’s has decided to shut down 169 outlets in India. McDonald’s, which has a presence in around 119 countries, said on Monday that it was terminating its agreement with Connaught Plaza Restaurant (CPRL) due to alleged breach of franchise agreements. CPRL is a 23-year-old 50:50 joint venture (JV) between Vikram Bakshi and McDonald’s India. McDonald’s operates a total of around 430 outlets in India through CPRL and Hardcastle Restaurants. The shutting down of stores may lead to more than 10,000 people losing their jobs.

US President Donald Trump and PM Narendra Modi agreed to enhance peace in the Indo-Pacific region by establishing a new two-by-two ministerial dialogue. Trump spoke with PM Modi on Monday night to greet him on the eve of India’s Independence Day. During the phone call, Trump welcomed the first-ever shipment of American crude oil to India, which will begin this month from Texas.

A survey revealed that about 84% of Indian students never complained about ragging, considering it a tradition. A Supreme Court-mandated committee conducted the study covering 37 colleges of the country. Nearly 36 per cent students believe ragging prepares them for the harsh realities of the world while 32% enjoyed the experience.
