China said it would beef up patrols along a disputed stretch of its border with India. “The Chinese military will continue to carry out its mission and responsibilities, strengthen its patrols and garrisons in the Donglang area and resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and security,” defence ministry spokesman Ren Guoqing said, after the two countries ended a more than two-month standoff.

Pakistan’s former military ruler Pervez Musharraf was declared absconding in the Benazir Bhutto murder case. Nearly 10 years after her assassination, former Rawalpindi CPO (City Police Officer) Saud Aziz and former Rawal Town SP Khurram Shahzad were sentenced to 17 years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh each. As an absconder, Musharraf legally must be arrested and brought to trial if he returns to Pakistan. The anti-terrorism court acquitted five people in the case.

India’s GDP grew 5.7 per cent on a year-on-year basis during the April-June period (Q1). During the previous quarter (January- March), the GDP had grown by 6.1 per cent. The GDP growth rate has been slowing every quarter since March 2016, when it stood at a whopping 9.1 per cent. Analysts have owed the slowing rate of growth to disruptions in the economy caused by demonetisation and teething problems after the roll out of GST.

Finance minister Arun Jaitley said after demonetisation, government’s next step will be to put an end to black money in the elections. He said that the government was in the final stages of giving shape to the policy to eradicate use of black money in the elections. Reacting to the charge demonetisation had failed as almost 99% of scrapped Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes were deposited, Jaitley said the measure was being confused with confiscation of currency. “Confiscation of money was not the objective of demonetisation,” he added.

Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar ruled out his resignation over alleged mishandling of the law and order situation in the state. “There will not be any change in leadership. Anybody can say anything but we are satisfied with our work. Whatever we did was right,” he told reporters at Haryana Bhawan after submitting to BJP chief Amit Shah a report on state government’s response to the law and order challenge in the wake of Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s conviction.
The CBI registered 18 cases for alleged irregularities in the land deals in Bikaner by companies, including one firm linked to Robert Vadra. “As many as 18 FIRs are registered. Four of them are against Vadra’s company which were allegedly involved in illegal purchase of nearly 275 bigha land. All the 18 FIRs are in connection with the purchase of close to 1,400 bigha land in fake names,” Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria had said on August 22 after referring the matter to the CBI.

The Centre said it has decided to extend the deadline for linking Aadhaar to various government schemes from September 30 to December 31. This is the second such extension; earlier, the Centre had fixed June 30 as the deadline for every citizen to furnish Aadhaar to be eligible to avail benefits under social welfare schemes. The deadline was then pushed back to September 30.
Telecom companies like Airtel, Telenor and Reliance Communications sought a revenue-share model from the content creators. At an open house session called by Trai on the issue of net neutrality on Wednesday, telecom companies demanded commercial arrangements with content creators to further monetise their mobile networks.The telecom players have been pushing for a share of the advertising pie generated by content companies, saying that they have made investments in network and spectrum.

In major reforms in the Indian Army after Independence, about 57,000 officers will be re-deployed. The reforms to ensure better utilisation of resources will be carried out by December 31, 2019. The ministry said civilians will be redeployed in different wings of the armed forces for improving efficiency. The reform initiatives were recommended by a committee headed by Lt Gen DB Shekatkar (retd).

A day after severe flooding, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation chief said the situation is now under control. The Suburban train services on the western line resumed and the stranded passengers were evacuated. “The quantum of rainfall was extremely high. We had 325 mm of rainfall and there were almost 26 locations where the rainfall exceeded 250mm. So, it was one of the highest unprecedented rainfalls,” BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta said.
There will be no tax cut on petrol and diesel to cushion the impact of drastic price hike. “That situation has not come where we should relook at tax structure,” Oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan said. While petrol prices have increased by Rs 6.08 to reach Rs 69.12 a litre in Delhi, the highest since August 2014, diesel rates have risen by Rs 3.65 to Rs 57.01.

The Reserve Bank of India said only 1.4 per cent of the old Rs 1,000 notes have not come back into the banking system. The central bank said, the cost incurred by RBI in printing notes has doubled to Rs 7,965 crore in the financial year 2016-17 from Rs 3,421 crore in 2015-16. It said that the surge in cost is on account of printing of new currency notes post-demonetisation.

Mumbai on ‘Red Alert’ as Met department predicted more rainfall in the city and sorrounding areas over the next 2-3 days. “Areas such as Mumbai, south Gujarat, Konkan, Goa and west Vidarbha will get extremely heavy rainfall in the next 24 to 48 hours. It is a serious situation. We have issued necessary warnings to the departments concerned, including airports,” AK Srivastav, head of climate monitoring and analysis at IMD Pune said. As a precautionary measure, the Fadnavis government has advised people to stay indoors today.

The Reserve Bank of India drew up a second list of over 40 defaulters, classified as non-performing assets. Banks have been told to initiate proceedings under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code against these defaulters within four months if there is no resolution until then. The 12 names identified by RBI in the first list that was prepared in June included large stressed accounts with outstanding of over Rs 5,000 crore with total dues of over Rs 1.75 lakh crore.
