The government today extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) to August 5. It also extended the deadline for linking Aadhaar with the Permanent Account Number (PAN) till August 31.The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) issued a statement saying the dates have been extended on receipt of complaints from “some taxpayers” that they were unable to log on to the e-filing website of the Income Tax department. The CBDT further said that the returns will not be processed “until the linkage of Aadhaar with PAN is done.”

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said nobody has the ability to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 2019 general election. “Given the current political scenario, no one can compete with Narendra Modi,” Nitish Kumar told mediapersons at a press conference. On walking out of the grand alliance, the chief minister said, “Laluji did not give any clarification on corruption charges. How could I remain silent as I talked about zero tolerance on corruption? Now I have a feeling that they did not have a proper answer.”
Snapdeal today called off the talks for its merger with Flipkart, said it wants to pursue an ‘independent path’. “Snapdeal has been exploring strategic options over the last several months. The company has now decided to pursue an independent path and is terminating all strategic discussions as a result,” a Snapdeal spokesperson said in a statement. The spokesperson added that the company expects to be financially self-sustainable by selling certain non-core assets.

Chinese soldiers entered into Indian territory and threatened shepherds grazing cattle in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. The incident took place on the morning of July 25 when a group of shepherds were asked to vacate the land by troops of the People’s Liberation Army, officials in the know said on the condition of anonymity. This is the second transgression, coming after the June 16 incursion by Chinese troops in Doklam in the Sikkim sector of the India-China border.

Iran has said that it has no obligation to award the Farzad B gas field contract to India. In May, Iran had signed an agreement with Russian company Gazprom for development of the gas field, which was discovered by a consortium of Indian state-run companies. This was seen as a retaliation against what Iran saw as a threat from India to cut purchase of Iranian oil if the commercial contract for Farzad B didn’t happen. India had offered to invest $11 billion to develop the gas field, earlier this month.

Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) yesterday gave the Centre a 10-day deadline to intervene in the Gorkhaland issue. GJM threatened to intensify the agitation in the plains and the Hills if Centre fails to intervene in the statehood issue. Gorkhaland supporters threw petrol bombs at cops yesterday, 200 metres from the Bhutan Gate, prompting retaliatory measures by police. The clash came a day after pro-Gorkhaland activists engaged with police in the foothills of Darjeeling, which left six police personnel and several activists injured.

The Central Information Commission (CIC) has ruled that RTI cannot be used for commercial gains. The order came after the complaint filed by the editor of a magazine against the public information officer of Dargah Khwaja Sahib Ajmer, who had denied him information on complaints filed against employees of the dargah and the status report of the inquiry conducted by the dargah. The CIC, while directing the dargah to furnish the information to the appellant, observed that RTI Act could not be used for personal gains.

Chinese military has ability to defeat all invading enemies, Xi Jinping said. The Chinese President’s comments came as he inspected a massive military parade at the country’s largest military base to mark the 90th founding anniversary of the 2.3-million strong army. While there was no reference in his speech to over a month-long India-China military standoff at Doklam in Sikkim section, his remarks came in the midst of shrill official media campaign and assertions by the Foreign and Defence Ministries here accusing Indian troops of trespassing into Chinese territory at Doklam.

An engraved ‘Bhagavad Gita’ near the statue of Kalam kicked up a row. The memorial was constructed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation with which the late former President was associated. The United States flew two B-1B bombers over the Korean peninsula. The bombers took off from a US air base in Guam, and were joined by Japanese and South Korean fighter jets during the exercise. The B-1B flight, conducted on Saturday, was in direct response to the missile test and the previous July 3 launch of the “Hwansong-14” rocket. North Korea said its latest ICBM test was a “warning” targeting the US for its efforts to slap new sanctions on Pyongyang and threatened a counter- strike if provoked militarily by Washington.
Heroin worth Rs 3,500 crore was seized by the Indian Coast Guard off Gujarat coast. The Indian Coast Guard intercepted and apprehended a merchant vessel carrying approximately 1,500 kg of heroin. The vessel was intercepted by the Coast Guard ship ‘Samudra Pavak’ at around 1200hrs today. This is the largest single haul of narcotics seized till date. A joint investigation of the vessel by the ICG, IB, police, Customs, Navy and other agencies is currently underway.

New registrations under the Goods & Services Tax (GST) crossed the 10 lakh mark, the revenue secretary Hasmukh Adhia tweeted yesterday. “Out of this 10-12 lakh, even if 8-9 lakh file returns there will be a substantial increase in revenues. It will also have benefits on the direct tax side and help to check evasion,” said N R Bhanumurthy, professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy. The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), the IT backbone of the new tax system, has also registered 86 lakh existing business and service providers.

A US delegation from the State Department visited New Delhi this week to discuss how India could plug all exposure to North Korea. Among the “suggestions” given to India were to limit and scale back its diplomatic engagement with Pyongyang. India’s exports to North Korea is about $110 million and in 2016, officials said, there was an over 30% drop in bilateral trade. In April this year, responding to UN resolutions, the Indian government had banned all trade (except food and medicines) with North Korea.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) will launch its Chandrayaan-2 mission, an advanced version of its previous 2018 mission with the objective of deeper lunar surface probe, next year. The railways is working on a project to discontinue providing blankets in AC coaches in some trains. The move to do away with blankets comes after the <a href=”http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/railways-plans-to-discontinue-providing-blankets-in-ac-coaches/articleshow/59827419.cms”>railways faced criticism </a>for giving untidy blankets to passengers. On a trial basis, the railways will increase the temperature in the AC coaches, from the current 19&deg;C to 24&deg;C, so that passengers don&#39;t shiver without blankets, an official said. According to initial estimates, the move is an economical option, considering that it takes Rs 55 to clean the bedroll while passengers are charged just Rs 22 for it.
The Centre is planning to set up five boarding schools for dalit girls in every state. As per the proposal with the social justice ministry, the government will open the boarding schools in educationally backward blocks with the largest SC population in the state. In the proposed schools, 70% seats will be reserved for SC girls and the rest would be open to other categories like general classes and the OBCs. The schools will provide education from Class VI to Class XII.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will become the interim prime minister of Pakistan for 45 days. A group of US senators sought enhanced cooperation with India in Afghanistan, a move that could annoy Pakistan. The lawmakers have introduced a legislative amendment to the National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA) – 2018 in the Senate to support their demand. The amendment seeks increasing India’s role in assisting the Afghan security forces through logistics support, threat analysis, intelligence, materiel, and maintenance support.
