Nirmala Sitharaman is the new Defence Minister, Piyush Goyal gets Railways after Cabinet rejig. The reshuffle of the Union Cabinet saw nine new ministers being sworn in. Four ministers were also elevated to Cabinet rank. Suresh Prabhu will now take charge of Commerce and Industry. Apart from Finance, Arun Jaitley will now also look after Corporate Affairs. Read.

PM Modi has arrived in China’s Xiamen for the 9th BRICS summit. He is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin in bilateral talks on the sidelines of the summit. Jinping in his opening address asked BRICS members to shelve their differences and accommodate each other’s concerns by enhancing mutual trust and strategic communication.
North Korea claimed its hydrogen bomb test was a ‘perfect success.’ The bomb was designed to be mounted on its newly developed intercontinental ballistic missile, the North said in the announcement. The test has sparked international condemnation, including from China, Pyongyang’s closest ally, and US President Donald Trump.

Low air fares on long-haul international routes may soon become a reality for Indian flyers. The debut of low-cost carriers on such routes may see one-way fare to some European cities drop to as low as Rs 12,000. Singapore Airlines’ low-cost subsidiary Scoot and Indian players like SpiceJet and IndiGo are expected to start operations to Europe in about a year’s time.
About 16 million children across India, Bangladesh and Nepal have been affected in the recent floods, UNICEF said. The most urgent needs for children are clean water, hygiene supplies to prevent the spread of disease and food supplies, the UN agency said. UNICEF, at the request of the state governments, is providing multi-sectoral planning and coordination support in Assam, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

The death toll in the building collapse in Mumbai’s Bhendi Bazaar area has risen to 34. Thirteen people were pulled out alive from the rubble till late last evening and seven more were still feared trapped. 19 injured are admitted in hospitals. The last reshuffle of the Union cabinet before the next Lok Sabha polls is likely on Sunday. 5 ministers were asked to resign as part of the larger restructuring. That includes Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Sanjiv Balyan. Two nominees of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar are likely to be sworn in, along with BJP nominees. Suresh Prabhu is likely to be shifted to Environment ministry.
The Supreme Court is likely to hear an appeal in the Bofors payoff case today. The appeal filed by BJP leader and advocate Ajay Kumar Agarwal, challenged the Delhi high court’s verdict discharging the Hinduja brothers in the case. In December last year, the CBI admitted that it was refused permission by the authorities a decade ago to appeal against the Delhi HC’s May 2005, order.

The Niti Aayog has proposed increasing penalty for polluting industrial units from Rs 1 lakh to minimum Rs 5 crore. It also proposed fine up to Rs 20 crore and imprisonment for life in cases of causing damage to larger areas. The enhanced penalties will replace the drastic step of closing down an unit. The law ministry’s has given its nod to the proposal, but the environment ministry has not yet put it before the Union Cabinet for clearance.
Ram Rahim acted like a wild beast, special CBI judge Jagdeep Singh said while sentencing the Dera chief. He committed breach of gravest nature by sexually assaulting his gullible and blind followers and deserves no mercy, the judge said. In West Bengal, two youths were lynched, allegedly by a vigilante group that spotted a mini-truck carrying seven cows. The incident occurred in Gadong panchayat area of Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal. When the persons in the truck failed to say where they were taking the cows, they were brought down from the vehicle and thrashed. Locals said cattle smuggling was rampant in the area due to the porous border with Bangladesh.
