A 5-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court declared triple talaq unconstitutional with a 3:2 majority. Three of the judges agreed, triple talaq was not sanctioned by Quran and hence could not form part of the fundamental right to the religion of Muslims. The other judges, even while holding triple talaq to be valid, ordered a stay on this practice for six months to enable legislature bring a law banning this practice. Read

19 MLAs loyal to the Dhinakaran-Sasikala camp have withdrawn support to the Palaniswami government in Tamil Nadu. They conveyed their decisions to the state governor C Vidyasagar Rao in individual letters. They said that the government has betrayed the trust of the people. This comes a day after the OPS and EPS factions of AIADMK merged, and speculations are rife of Sasikala being removed as party general secretary.
China has come to the defence of Pakistan, after US President Trump’s stern warning to Islamabad for harbouring terrorists. A Chinese official said Pakistan was on the front line in the war against terrorism and had made great sacrifices. China has its own security concerns in the region, in particular any links between militants in Pakistan and Afghanistan and Islamist groups China blames for violence in its Xinjiang region.

The CBI has filed chargesheet against former RJD MP Shahabuddin in the killing of journalist Rajdeo Ranjan. Shahabuddin, currently lodged in Tihar, has been charged under IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy and murder and provisions of Arms Act. Bihar Police had charged six persons in the case before the probe was taken over by CBI. Shahabuddin is facing trial in more than 45 criminal cases.
