Mumbai came to a standstill after heavy rainfall. The Maharashtra government and civic authorities sounded high alert as torrential rains lashed Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and other parts of the state for the fourth consecutive day, severely affecting normal life and paralysing the lifelines — local train and bus services — in the state capital. The state government has requisitioned the services of five disaster management teams, including three from Pune, to tackle any eventuality in Mumbai.

PM Modi will travel to Xiamen in China to attend the BRICS summit. The summit will be held from September 3-5. The announcement of Modi’s visit comes a day after India and China ended their 73-day standoff in Dokalam by withdrawing their troops from the area. From China, the Prime Minister will travel to Myanmar for a state visit from September 5 to 7 at the invitation of Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw.
Rabri Devi and son Tejashwi were quizzed by income tax department. The two were questioned by the income tax department for over an hour in connection with its alleged benami assets probe against them and others in land deals worth Rs 1,000 crore. The department had earlier questioned Lalu Prasad’s MP daughter Misa Bharti and her husband Shailesh Kumar in this case. Benami properties are those in which the real beneficiary is not the one in whose name the property has been purchased.

Devendra Jhajharia became the first para athlete to receive Khel Ratna. Jharjharia along with hockey star Sardar Singh received India’s highest sporting honour by President Kovind today. Javelin thrower Jhajharia is the only Indian to win two Paralympic gold medals — 2004 Athens Games and 2016 Rio Paralympics — while star mid-fielder Sardar has been the architect of India hockey team’s many victories in the last few years.
Vishal Sikka’s wife Vandana quit Infosys Foundation today. Vandana was the chairperson of Infosys Foundation, USA and served the organisation for two and a half years. Infosys Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the IT services company. Vishal Sikka had quit Infosys earlier this month. The Infosys board and Sikka both cited Murthy’s constant bickering and allegations as the reason behind the drastic decision.
