Protests against ‘Padmaavat’ turned violent across several states today with mobs torching vehicles and blocking roads. Members of several fringe outfits took out rallies and around 50 activists of the Karni Sena burnt an effigy of the film’s director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the Indore-Depalpur road. At least 48 people have been arrested in Ahmedabad and 35 in Mumbai for indulging in violent acts over the release of ‘Padmaavat’. Subsequently, theatre owners across Gujarat on Wednesday announced their intention to not give the film a screening till the matter was resolved, to ensure “the safety of customers as well as to save their property.” Read more

Delhi high court (HC) today refused to pass any interim order on staying the Centre’s notification disqualifying 20 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs for holding offices of profit. The court ordered the Election Commission (EC) to make no announcement whatsoever for bypolls in Delhi until the next date of hearing of the AAP MLAs’ plea, which it set for January 29. In addition, the Delhi HC ordered the EC and the Centre – which disqualified the 20 AAP MLAs last week- to file their reply on the AAP MLAs’ pleas challenging their disqualification, by February 6. It summoned all the records pertaining to the proceedings leading to the recommendation of the EC to disqualify the 20 MLAs.
Bombay high court today quashed a lower court order that had banned the media from reporting proceedings of the Sohrabuddin Shaikh fake encounter case trial. Justice Revati Mohite-Dere firmly held that the special CBI court overreached its powers in issuing the prohibition on the press. She said that the Criminal Procedure Code provided only for the high courts and the Supreme Court to issue such ban orders. The judge added that mere apprehension of sensationalism by the accused was not a sufficient ground for such gag orders.

Lahore high court today restrained Pakistan from arresting the 2008 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed till further order. Saeed had on Tuesday moved the court seeking protection from arrest or action against Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD) and Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation (FIF) ahead of the visit of the monitoring team of the United Nations Security Council 1267 Sanctions Committee. In his plea, he had said that the government wants to arrest him at the behest of US and India, whose lobby for the last many years has been trying to prove that he was “somehow involved in Mumbai attacks”.
A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court today sentenced former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav to 5 years in jail in the Chaibasa fodder scam case. Former Bihar CM Jagannath Mishra has also been found guilty in the case and awarded a five year jail term for embezzling funds from the Chaibasa treasury. Both Lalu and Mishra have been fined Rs 5 lakh each by the Ranchi court. Soon after the verdict, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) said the special CBI court order was not final and it would appeal in the high court and, if necessary, in the Supreme Court.
