A new definition of ‘blindness’ will bring down the number of blind people in the country by around 40 lakh. The new definition says a person who is unable to count fingers from a distance of three metres would be considered “blind” as against the earlier stipulation of six metres. Following this, the population of blind people in India will reduce from 1.20 crore to 80 lakh.
The government will come out with a new code for doctors to ensure that generic drugs get precedence over branded drugs. Following PM Modi’s announcement that doctors will need to prescribe generic drugs rather than more expensive branded ones, the govt has given in-principal approval to the new code aimed at making the drug supply chain accountable to the proposed marketing code.

New Zealand is introducing tougher requirements for skilled overseas workers to control its immigration numbers. New Zealand announced yesterday that it is committed to the principle of “kiwis first” as it tries to control immigration numbers that have reached an all-time high. The changes come a day after Australia said it would scrap a temporary visa for skilled overseas workers.
The BSF yesterday sacked the constable who had posted videos alleging that poor quality food was being served to jawans. Constable Tej Bahadur Yadav was dismissed from service following a court martial inquiry that found him guilty of making false charges. A senior BSF officer said that Yadav has also “been found guilty on certain charges of indiscipline including uploading the said video in violation of laid down procedures and rules.”
