Death toll has reached to 170 in flood-hit Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The current spell of flood, triggered by incessant rains in Bihar and neighbouring Nepal, has claimed over 130 lives, while nearly 98 lakh in 18 districts of the state. Bihar reported 11 deaths on Friday alone. The floods in UP has claimed over 40 lives so far. Army was called in for relief and rescue operations in deluge-hit eastern Uttar Pradesh districts adjoining Nepal.

In a blow to the Army’s modernization plans, the govt has junked the procurement plan for over 44,000 light machine guns for foot soldiers. This is the third such project, after the cases for new assault rifles and close-quarter battle carbines, to be junked over the last two years.
