Cyclone Ockhi has weakened into a depression and may not hit the Gujarat coast near Surat as predicted earlier. “The cyclone has already weakened into a deep depression and it is highly likely that it will turn into a depression. There are possibilities that it does not hit the coast at all and, as there is a probability of dissipation over the sea before the landfall,” Jayanta Sarkar, director of the MeT office at Ahmedabad, said.

The Supreme Court asked the Centre to bring a law to regulate the legal profession and to prescribe ‘floor and ceiling of advocates’ fees’. Referring to various judgments of the apex court and reports of the Law Commission, the court said it was high time the Centre intervened and brought a legislation to maintain ethics in the legal profession and ensure that the poor were not deprived of legal assistance from competent lawyers due to lack of funds.
The Election Commission rejected nomination papers of actor Vishal Krishnan and Deepa Jayakumar for the December 21 RK Nagar byelection. After the returning officer rejected his nomination, Vishal and his supporters staged a protest. Later, the police allowed Vishal to meet the returning officer to submit his representation. Sources said Deepa’s affidavit was not in order and that she had not filled all the columns.
