A day after Budget, the benchmark Sensex plummeted 840 points while the broader NSE Nifty tanked over 250 points. The Budget 2018-19 presented on Thursday imposed long- term capital gains tax of 10 per cent on equities. Investors will also have to pay 10 per cent tax on distributed income from equity-oriented mutual funds.

India said it was ‘closely monitoring’ the situation in Maldives after the country’s Supreme Court overturned the convictions of political prisoners. “In the spirit of democracy and rule of law, it is imperative for all organs of the Government of Maldives to respect and abide by the order of the apex court,” the ministry of external affairs said in a statement, adding that India “wishes to see a stable, peaceful and prosperous Maldives.”
The CBI today filed a petition in the SC challenging Delhi HC order quashing all charges against accused in the Bofors case. The filing of the appeal assumes significance as Attorney General K K Venugopal had recently advised the agency against moving a petition against the high court verdict after a delay of 12 years.
