The government has approved draft legislation that bans instant triple talaq. The proposed law would only be applicable to instant triple talaq or ‘talaq-e-biddat’ and it would give power to the victim to approach a magistrate seeking “subsistence allowance” for herself and minor children. SC has refused Congress’s plea to verify 20% of VVPAT slips with EVM votes. Earlier today, Congress had moved SC seeking directions to the Election Commission of India to count and cross verify at least 20% of the VVPAT paper trail with the EVM votes. The apex court dismissed the plea arguing that it cannot override the Election Commission’s complete discretion to conduct polls.
The Delhi High Court has denied interim stay on Sharad Yadav’s disqualification as Rajya Sabha MP. Yadav has been, however, allowed to draw allowances, perks and retain his bungalow as an MP, but has been restrained from attending the Winter Session of Parliament. The order came on Yadav’s plea challenging his disqualification on several grounds, including that he was not given a hearing before the December 4 order was passed.

The Supreme Court has extended the Aadhaar linking deadline to March 31, 2018. The Centre had yesterday offered to extend the deadline for mandatory quoting of Aadhaar and Permanent Account Number, or PAN, for bank accounts and certain financial transactions from December 31, 2017. The apex court said the Constitution bench would commence final hearing from January 17 on the petition challenging the Aadhaar scheme itself.
Cricketer Ajinkya Rahane’s father was arrested after his car ran over a 67-year-old woman. The woman, identified as Ashatai Kamble, was reportedly hit by Madhukar’s car on the national highway near Kagal. It is unclear who was driving the car at the time of the accident. Rahane’s family, including his mother and sister, were on their way to Konkan for a vacation.
