A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra directed all the parties concerned to file their written submissions to put forth their case. | Justice J Chelameswar has written a letter to the Chief Justice of India on the elevation of Justice KM Joseph. Justice Chelameswar has asked CJI to convene a meeting of the collegium to urgently forward to the Centre the name of Uttarakhand Chief Justice KM Joseph as the judge of the apex court. Justice Chelameswar, who retires on June 22, has responded to all the points raised in the communication to the CJI by law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad expressing reservations on the elevation of Justice Joseph. |

| The Supreme Court has set aside the Calcutta high court order directing the West Bengal election commission (SEC) to accept nominations of candidates for contesting panchayat polls that were filed through email. The bench said panchayat elections that are scheduled for May 14 will go on unhindered and the SEC and the state government will ensure “free and fair” polls. The court, however, expressed concern about nearly 20,000 panchayat seats going to the ruling Trinamool Congress without a contest and asked the SEC to not issue a notification declaring these results till July 3. |
