Ahead of the floor test in Karnataka today, Congress-JD(S) are in the Supreme Court over BJP MLA being made the pro tem speaker. BJP MLA K G Bopaiah was sworn in as pro tem speaker by governor Vajubhai R Vala on Friday, within hours of the SC passing an interim order that a pro tem speaker should preside over Saturday’s trust vote. The Congress-JD(S) combine approached the Supreme Court for the second time in as many days to challenge the appointment, terming it “ex facie unconstitutional and illegal”. More than 100 people have been killed in a passenger plane crash in Cuba. The Boeing 737 aircraft, on a domestic flight to Holguin in eastern Cuba, crashed shortly after taking off from Havana, Cuban state-run media reported. There were 105 passengers, including five children, and nine crew members. The fire from the crash had been put out and authorities were identifying bodies, President Diaz-Canel said, adding that authorities were investigating the cause of the crash.
At least 10 people were killed in an incident of shooting in a Texas high school. The gunman, arrested on murder charges, was identified as Dimitrios Pagourtzis, a 17-year-old junior at Santa Fe High School. He is being held on capital murder charges, meaning he could face the death penalty. Abbott said there were no “warning signs” about the suspect who had no criminal history. Law enforcement authorities were questioning two “people of interest,” the governor said. One may have “certain information,” he said, and the other had some “suspicious reactions.”

PM Modi is scheduled to visit Kashmir today to launch several projects. In an espionage case involving an alleged love affair between an Indian diplomat and a Pakistani ISI agent, a Delhi court found the diplomat guilty on Friday of spying with the intention of helping an “enemy country”. The court convicted Madhuri Gupta, who was posted at the Indian high commission in Islamabad, for passing secret information to Pakistan’s ISI agents. The alleged motive behind the passing of information by Gupta was her love for Jamshed. The prosecution relied on an email to prove the motive.
