The National Family Health Survey 2015-16, conducted by the health ministry, found that the use of condoms had gone up in 10 years from 2% to 12% among sexually active unmarried women aged 15 to 49 years. The maximum use of condoms among unmarried women was seen in the 20-24 years age group. The survey also found that three out of eight men believed contraception was “women’s business”, and that the man should not have to worry about it.

India may have low cancer rates as compared to western nations but it accounts for among the highest premature and avoidable deaths due to the disease. A study published last week states India and Brics colleagues Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa lose tens of billions of dollars in lost productivity due to cancer deaths. India recorded a total productivity loss of $6.7 billion in 2012 due to cancer, representing 0.36% of the GDP that year, the study found. This was second only to South Africa’s, which recorded a loss of $1.9 billion, amounting to almost 0.5% of its GDP.
Cities across India where the hazardous particulate matter exceeds prescribed limits will now under law have to implement measures to reduce dust. The Union environment ministry has now notified specific rules under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 making its implementation “mandatory” for such cities and towns where PM10 and PM2.5 exceed limits. The notified rules inserted 11-point measures in the existing Act, empowering the ministry to issue notices against local authorities and state agencies for non-implementation of those actions.
