India has to reply to the defence evidence before November 3 in the Vijay Mallya extradition case. The government may not challenge the SC verdict terming sex with a minor wife under 18 years as rape. Successive governments, wary of ruffling social sensitivities, have taken a conservative stand on the grounds that in a large number of marriages the bride is under 18 years. With the SC ruling, the Centre has the opportunity to see the situation as a fait accompli where the matter has been taken out of its hands.
The Tata Group has quit the telecom sector, merging its business with Bharti Airtel. “The merger is on a debtfree and cash-free basis,” the companies said in a statement. Airtel will gain access to around 180 MHz of spectrum spread across 850 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2100 MHz bands and add Tata’s nearly 40 million mobile subscribers to its own base of 280 million.

The United States announced on Thursday it is withdrawing from Unesco. US in a statement cited ‘continuing anti-Israel bias at Unesco’ as one of the reason behind the decision. The withdrawal will become effective end of December 2018. Until that time, the US, which provides around $80 million to Unesco annually, will remain a full member.
The government is set to kick off strategic sale in several companies, including helicopter service provider Pawan Hans. If the plan goes through, it will be the first set of strategic sale since 2003-04.
