Dr Soumya Swaminathan has been appointed the WHO’s deputy director general, programmes, in Geneva. This is the second-highest position at the UN agency. Centre has reduced the basic excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 a litre. The move came as diesel price hit a record high of Rs 59.14 a litre in Delhi and petrol was at a two-year high of Rs 70.88. The government, facing flak for rise in fuel prices, has acknowledged that it was creating inflationary pressures.
Eighteen farmers died due to inhalation of ‘profefonos’ pesticide in Yavatmal, Maharashtra in the past few weeks.
