| The Supreme Court ruled that it is not mandatory for Hindu married couples to wait for six months for separation in case of mutual consent. The court ruled that the stipulation under the Hindu Marriage Act for a six-month wait could be done away with if all efforts for mediation and conciliation intended to reunite the parties had failed. The waiving off can be considered if the parties had already lived separately for at least a year.

| Eateries that are still collecting service charge may soon have to pay tax. Under the Consumer Protection Act, eateries were warned not to charge customers for anything other than food and beverages as this would amount to an unfair trade practice. But many eateries are continuing with the practice. “In view of seriousness of issue, Deptt. of Consumer Affairs has written to CBDT to consider inclusion of service charge while assessing tax,” consumer affairs minister Ram Vilas Pawan tweeted.

An ultra-light howitzer M-777 that India imported from the US was damaged during field trials. While a probe is on, the incident is being considered a setback for the Army as the force is desperately in need of howitzers. The country last inducted Swedish Bofors guns in the 1980s. Since the Bofors payoff controversy, India has not been able to acquire howitzers.
