| The Centre approved a Rs 31,748 crore “definitive five-year action programme” to bolster the Coast Guard. The aim is to make the Coast Guard a 175-ship and 110-aircraft force by 2022 to strengthen coastal security, safeguard island territories and offshore assets, undertake anti-piracy, anti-smuggling and pollution-control operations. The plan intends to “consolidate the progress” made by the Coast Guard after the 26/11 strikes punched gaping holes in the country’s coastal security. |

| The University of Hyderabad’s action is not the reason for Rohith Vemula’s suicide, said an inquiry commission report. The report, that was made public yesterday, said that Vemula’s suicide note was on the record, which showed that he was a troubled individual and was unhappy for several reasons. “If he would have been angry with the decision of the university, certainly either he would have written in specific words or would have indicated in this regard. But he did not do the same,” the report said. |
| Pakistan has begun consultations on nomination of an ad hoc judge for the Kulbhushan Jadhav case to be heard at the International Court of Justice. The report said that the attorney general’s office has forwarded names of senior lawyer Makhdoom Ali Khan, former chief justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani and former prime minister of Jordon Awn Shawkat Al-Khasawneh to the PM’s office for consideration. The nomination, according to sources, will be finalised next month, after receiving inputs from the Foreign Office and the military. |

| The Supreme Court slammed Haryana’s Khattar government for violating the law using “influence in high places”. The bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta said that the Sunder Marketing Associates used influence in high places to “get a benefit that would not be ordinarily granted to anybody else.” The Associates, owned by Naveen Goel, was ineligible to bid for Dadam quarry in Bhiwani district. Hence, it formed a joint venture with Karamjeet Singh and Co Ltd (KJSL) to become eligible. |
| The National Investigation Agency’s questioning of Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s sons were focussed on their father’s role in funding terror, sources said. A top official said during their questioning last week that the two brothers were asked largely about their father’s role in the funding of militants, letters received by him from Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen, controversial orders allegedly issued by him for protests and burning of schools/government buildings in the valley. |
