India kick-started its ‘mother of all underwater defence deals’ to build six advanced stealth submarines for an estimated Rs 70,000 crore. This conventional submarine programme called Project-75 (India) got delayed for 10 years. Six shipbuilders from France, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Spain and Japan are in fray to build the submarines along with an Indian shipyard. These submarines will have land-attack cruise missiles, air-independent propulsion for greater underwater endurance.

Former Isro chief and internationally-renowned space scientist UR Rao passed away early today. From Aryabhatta to the Mars Orbiter Mission, Rao has continued to work with the space agency on several of its projects. He held several top positions over the years, including at foreign universities. He has won 10 international awards and many national awards. In May 2016, Rao became the first Indian to be given the ‘Hall of Fame’ award by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF).
