PM Narendra Modi will depart for Israel today. The three-day visit – the first ever of an Indian prime minister to Israel – is a landmark moment for the Jewish state, a country seeking the friendship of powerful allies and customers for its advanced military equipment. India and Israel will sign agreements to deepen cooperation on the state-of-the-art technologies in the space sector during PM Modi’s visit. Cybersecurity and terrorism are also on the charts to be discussed between Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu.

North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the sea today. The missile launch from its western region into the sea off its east coast comes ahead of a summit of leaders from the Group of 20 countries in Germany later this week. The missile flew for about 40 minutes and may have landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone. The North’s missile launch is the last since Pyongyang fired several cruise missiles in early June.
22 states have abolished checkposts to ensure hassle-free GST implementation. Eight states are on the verge of scrapping the checkposts, which is expected to ensure smooth flow of goods across the country. The removal of checkposts will come as a huge relief for trucks which queue up for hours to get their consignments and papers checked, causing delays and adding to costs. Keen to ensure that the momentum is maintained, authorities are also keeping a close watch to ensure that any roadblock is removed swiftly.

Nandan Nilekani announced launch of a $100 million fund to back entrepreneurs. Nilekani, the co-founder of Infosys is launching the fund with Helion’s senior managing director Sanjeev Aggarwal to help entrepreneurs who aim to build enterprises that can scale into next-generation, billion-dollar companies. Any offensive social media post targeting the SC/ST community will be punishable. Even if made in a closed group, such posts will be punishable, the Delhi high court said. Though the judgment came in reference to a Facebook “Wall”, the ruling can extend to other social media outlets such as WhatsApp which have closed privacy settings. The HC clarified that only exception from prosecution in these cases would be if the complainant and those connected to him/her on Facebook are related to each other.
