The government today made Aadhaar mandatory for opening bank accounts as well as for transactions of Rs 50,000 and above. Existing account holders have been asked to furnish their Aadhaar numbers by December 31, 2017, failing which the bank account will cease to be operational. Post June 1, those not having Aadhaar at the time of opening of account will have to furnish proof of enrolment.

Switzerland has ratified exchange of financial account information with India in a move meant to flush out black money. The Swiss Federal Council said the implementation is planned for 2018 and the first set of data should be exchanged in 2019. The council will soon notify the Modi government about the exact date from which the automatic exchange would begin.
A special court today convicted the six accused, including Abu Salem, in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. Others who were convicted include Feroz Khan, Taher Merchant, Riyaz Siddiqui and Karimulla Khan. Abdul Qayoom Shaikh was the lone accused who was acquitted in the case. The court will pronounce the sentence after hearing arguments from the defence and prosecution.

A Russian air strike in Syria may have killed Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The air strike was launched after our forces in Syria received intelligence that a meeting of Islamic State leaders was being planned near Raqqa, the Russian defence ministry said. However, the information has not been confirmed and is being checked via various channels.
Arunabh Kumar, who is facing allegations of molestation, today stepped down as the CEO of TVF. In a statement posted on his Twitter handle, Kumar wrote, “A lot has happened in the last three months which has mentally and emotionally drained me. However, I have faith that eventually truth will prevail.” Dhawal Gusain has been appointed as the new CEO of TVF.
