Air India’s ticket sales to the US have jumped 60% after a gadget ban was imposed on Gulf carriers by the Trump administration. All passengers on board Air India flights from India to destinations in the US can carry laptops in their cabin bags and use them on the flight. However, passengers boarding direct flights from Gulf countries must check in all electronic devices larger than a smartphone and join longer security queues when they disembark in the US.
A CRPF officer ‘miraculously’ regained consciousness yesterday just a few weeks after he was shot 9 times and had slipped into a deep coma. Chetan Kumar Cheetah was severely injured in an encounter with the militants in the Bandipora district of Kashmir. The 45-year-old CRPF commandant had suffered bullet injuries in his head, the upper limbs were badly fractured and the globe of his right eye had ruptured. Doctors at the AIIMS trauma centre told TOI that he is now fit to be discharged.
A few countries who had previously opposed India’s membership bid to Nuclear Suppliers Group may change their stance. The evolution in positions has been a result of continued backroom diplomacy said sources familiar with developments. “There is a greater buy-in from these countries“, said senior German diplomatic sources. Needless to add, China is not among these countries.
At least 100 people were killed and 400 injured yesterday in a suspected gas attack in Syria. Suspected chemical attacks killed at least 100 people in Syria’s rebel-held northwestern province of Idlib on Tuesday and left another 400 suffering from respiratory problems. The death toll is likely to rise, according to the Union of Medical Care Organizations.
The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh yesterday waived off farm loans worth Rs 36,000 crore. In a farmer-friendly decision, the Yogi government has also decided to set up 5,000 wheat purchasing centres across the state. Calling it a coincidence that the government’s first cabinet took nine decisions on the festival of Ram Navami, state health minister Siddharth Nath Singh said that a proposal on illegal slaughterhouses was also discussed.
