The government plans to grant more autonomy to better performing universities. HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said the universities selected for more autonomy will remain under the University Grants Commission but will have the freedom to start new courses, off-campus centres, skill development courses, research parks and other new academic programmes. The selected universities include Jawaharlal Nehru University, Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University, University of Hyderabad, and English and Foreign Languages University, Telangana. The Supreme Court said there would be no automatic arrests under the SC/ST Act. The top court also said a preliminary inquiry must be conducted by police within seven days before taking any action under the provision of the Act. Further, the SC introduced anticipatory bail for those allegedly in violation of the Act. The working of the SC/ST Act “should not result in perpetuating casteism which can have an adverse impact on the integration of society and constitutional values”.
The Central Reserve Police Force will be exclusively provided 100 bulletproof vehicles. The government is procuring 141 medium bulletproof vehicles for all the central paramilitary forces so that jawans/officers can safely reach operation sites and camps. This will allow the force to conduct law and order duties and carry out special operations without the fear of being attacked on the highways. The first batch of 20 bulletproof vehicles is likely to arrive in two months.

India and the European Union (EU) have signed a pact for sharing of satellite data. Under the pact, the EU will provide India free, full and open access to its global data from its Copernicus satellite system. Copernicus comprises a constellation of six families of satellites (Sentinels) and dozens of third-party satellites that store a large amount of global data and help in providing reliable information on the status of our planet.
The US is facing a retaliation threat from four WTO members. Japan, South Korea, Brazil and the European Union have attacked the US for increasing import duty on steel and aluminium. They have also threatened retaliatory action as Washington’s stance at the multilateral body faces scrutiny. An informal WTO ministerial meeting took place in Delhi on March 19 and 20.
