From May 1, petrol and diesel prices will change every day starting with a few cities. The pilot project to change prices in sync with daily movement of international oil prices and rupee-US dollar fluctuations will be first implemented in Puducherry, Vizag, Udaipur, Jamshedpur, and Chandigarh. Later, the practice will be extended to the rest of the country.

China warned India that the Dalai Lama’s visit to Tawang will have negative impact on the border dispute. Adding to the ongoing sabre-rattling, a state-run Chinese daily claimed that people of Arunachal Pradesh live “difficult lives” under India’s “illegal” rule and they look forward to returning to China.
Somalia’s military rescued eight Indian crew members who had been held hostage by pirates last week. Regional forces surrounded the pirate captors in a small village outside Hobyo town, Abdullahi Ahmed Ali, the town’s mayor said. Four pirates were arrested during the operation. In recent weeks there has been a resurgence of piracy off Somalia’s coast after five years of inactivity.

Major opposition parties met President Pranab Mukherjee and complained that efforts are on to “muzzle voices of dissent”. “An environment of fear and insecurity is prevailing in the country and voices of dissent are being suppressed. In a democracy, the rule of law must prevail but self-styled lumped elements have indulged in violence, mob lynching and harassment, which are being witnessed across the country,” the memorandum submitted to the President reads.
In a first major administrative reshuffle, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath transferred 20 IAS officers. Principal Secretary (Information) Navneet Sehgal, who wielded considerable influence under the Akhilesh Yadav government, has been divested of all charge and replaced by UP cadre IAS officer Avanish Kumar Awasthi, who was relieved by the Centre following a request by the CM.
