Attorney General KK Venugopal told the government that the CBI should not file a special leave petition (SLP) before the Supreme Court in the Bofors case. In a major setback to efforts to reopen the Bofors payoff case that brought down the Rajiv Gandhi government in the 1989 election and long remained a political albatross for Congress, attorney general K K Venugopal has advised against the CBI filing a special leave petition in the Supreme Court. He said that as more than 12 years had lapsed since the acquittal of key Bofors accused by the Delhi high court, any appeal by the CBI was likely to fail on account of delay itself. Read more

A three-judge in-house panel of the Supreme Court recommended removal of Allahabad HC judge SN Shukla after finding serious allegations against him in medical exam scam. Finding substance in allegations against the Allahabad high court Justice S N Shukla related to the medical admission scam, a three-judge in-house committee has recommended his removal to CJI Dipak Misra. Acting on the committee’s recommendations and as per paragraph 7(i) of the in-house procedure, the CJI advised Justice Shukla to either resign or take voluntary retirement. However, Justice Shukla refused to do either. Left with no option, the CJI advised the Allahabad HC chief justice to withdraw judicial work from Justice Shukla with immediate effect.
President Kovind’s pitch for simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly polls in his address to the Parliament has rekindled speculation of the 2019 elections being preponed. In his first address to the Parliament on Monday, Kovind argued that frequent polls hurt the economy by imposing a huge burden on human resources while the ‘model code of conduct’ impeded development activities. The address, which is written by the government, said a “sustained debate is required on the subject of simultaneous elections and all political parties need to arrive at a consensus on this issue”. The buzz was reinforced later on Monday at a meeting of NDA leaders where PM Narendra Modi reiterated the point.
