| The SC will today start final hearings in the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi case. By coincidence, these hearings will take place on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid by Hindu fundamentalists. At stake are 2.77 acres of land on a disputed site, which the Allahabad high court in September 2010 partitioned equally among three parties: Muslims, Hindus and the Nirmohi Akhara (a Hindu group). | JD (U) MPs Sharad Yadav and Ali Anwar were disqualified from the Rajya Sabha late yesterday. The order was issued by Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu, on a petition filed by JD (U) MP RCP Singh on September 2, who sought the two MPs’ disqualification on the ground that they defected. The move also came after the Election Commission recognised the Nitish-led JD(U) faction as the real party and allowed it to use the reserved ‘arrow’ poll symbol. |
| The US Supreme Court allowed the Trump government to put a travel ban on six mostly Muslim nations. They are Chad, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. Travellers from these countries will not be given a visa to enter the US. The court said the ban can be fully implemented despite several open court cases challenging it. |

| The Supreme Court mandated time frame for appointments in the lower judiciary is not being followed. According to a study by the New Delhi-based Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, 2.5 crore cases are pending across the states as nearly 23 per cent of posts in the lower judiciary, the first contact for a majority of litigants, remain vacant. The average recruitment cycle, calculated for 18 states over 10 years, is 326.7 days for a three-tier recruitment process of civil judges. This is much longer than the court-prescribed limit of 273 days. |
