Triple talaq verdict: Bragging rights for BJP, opposition in bind
BJP projected its opposition to triple talaq as a “gender issue” and though its opponents argued that the concern was motivated more by a desire to stoke polarisation, their wariness of offending conservative Muslim opinion prevented the charge from sticking.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down the controversial Islamic practice of instant talaq, terming it to be unconstitutional, and erased it from the 1,400-yearold Sharia-dictated divorce manual by ruling that this arbitrary and whimsical mode of ending marriage violated Muslim women’s fundamental right to equality.
