Sunday evening brief Jul 9 2017
Good evening!
Here’s everything that transpired during the course of the day…
India hit out at Pakistan for glorifying Burhan Wani. Islamabad’s terror support and sponsorship need to be condemned by ‘one and all’, the Centre said. The comments came a day after Pakistan Army chief praised Wani, Hizbul Mujahideen commander who was killed in an encounter with Indian security forces last year. Wani was responsible for several attacks against security personnel in Kashmir.

The Indian Army is getting ready for a long haul in Doklam. The Army is holding onto its position in the Doklam area near the Bhutan tri-junction, notwithstanding China ratcheting up rhetoric against India demanding pulling back of its troops. The Indian soldiers deployed in the disputed area have pitched their tents, in an indication that they are unlikely to retreat unless there was reciprocity from China’s PLA personnel in ending the face-off at an altitude of around 10,000 feet in the Sikkim section.
G20 praised India’s initiatives for promoting ease of doing business. In its Hamburg Action Plan, adopted at the G20 Summit of leaders from the world’s 20 largest economies, the group also noted that “in the financial sector, India is popularising a number of derivative instruments in exchanges or electronic trading platforms” as part of measures to enhance resilience of its economy. The acknowledgement from the G20 Summit assumes significance in the wake of India trying hard to improve its global ranking for ease of doing business.

New incidents of violence and arson were reported from Darjeeling. The sporadic incidents were reported after a fresh flare-up in the region following a pro-Gorkhaland activist’s death allegedly in police firing. The protesters set on fire the sub-divisional office in Kurseong, resulting in the building getting partially burnt. The picturesque Darjeeling hills have been on the boil since last month over a demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland.
Iraq announced ‘victory’ over Islamic State in the city of Mosul. The vicory comes after a gruelling nearly nine-month battle against the Islamic state. “The commander in chief of the armed forces (Prime Minister) Haider al-Abadi arrived in the liberated city of Mosul and congratulated the heroic fighters and the Iraqi people for the great victory,” said a statement from PM’s office. Iraq launched the operation to retake Mosul in October. IS now controls less than a square kilometer (mile) of territory in Mosul’s Old City.
