The Supreme Court agreed to examine whether execution of death sentence by hanging could be replaced by other less painful procedures. Terming the Constitution as a “compassionate” and “organic” guiding book, a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said the legislature can think of changing the law so that a convict, facing death penalty, dies “in peace and not in pain”.
The Supreme Court appointed amicus curiae to consider fresh probe into Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. Honeypreet allegedly gave Rs 1.25 crore to Dera Sacha Sauda’s Panchkula branch head for inciting violence, said police. A 70-year-old man was stoned to death in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir over rumours of braid-chopping.
