The MEA is communicating with the Indian diaspora in US, Venezuela and elsewhere in wake of Hurricane Irma. The Indian missions in France and Netherlands too were in touch with local officials to provide assistance to any Indian affected, an MEA spokesperson said. After landfall in the Caribbean, Irma is now expected to strike the Florida Keys, south of Miami, late today or tomorrow. Read

The principal of the Gurugram school where a student was found murdered has been suspended. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has recommended that a case of negligence be registered against the management of the Ryan International School. A school bus conductor, the suspect in the murder, has been arrested and sent to 3-day police custody. He is said to have confessed to the crime.
The CBI has registered a corruption case against former Union environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan. The agency raided her premises in Chennai in connection with clearance given during her tenure to Electosteel Casting Limited, for diversion of forest land for mining, in alleged violation of laws. She was removed as environment minister by the Congress after the alleged irregularities surfaced in 2015.

After banned notes and explosive materials, now a secret tunnel has been found within Dera Sacha Sauda premises. The tunnel connected the Dera chief Ram Rahim’s quarters to the hostel of his female disciples. An empty box for AK-47 cartridges was also recovered during the ongoing sanitisation exercise inside the headquarters of his sect. The search operation, on orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, is being videographed.
The 3-day long strike by non- permanent workers at the Tata Motors’ Jamshedpur plant has ended. A solution was reached after the management agreed to provide permanent employment to 200 workers. A committee has been formed to address issues like reform in payment schedule and life insurance for non- permanent workers. The management assured that no actions will be taken against those who took part in the strike.
