PM Narendra Modi has called for eradication of VIP culture by cleansing the Indian mindset. The PM said, ‘VIP’ must be replaced by ‘EPI’ – Every Person is Important, adding that his vision of ‘New India’ was that in place of VIP, priority should be accorded to EPI. “There was disdain for VIP culture in the country and the decision to remove red beacons had struck a deep chord with people,” the PM said.

At least eight persons were run over by a goods train near Sirari railway station in Bihar’s Sheikhpura. Two others were reported to be critically injured in the accident, which took place around 7 pm yesterday. Railway sources said the accident took place when at least 10 villagers were crossing the track over an underpass east of Sirari station.
The Election Commission is planning to write to the government for banning candidates charged for bribing voters. The poll watchdog will be approaching the law ministry soon to amend the Representation of the People Act to disqualify candidates named in chargesheets for bribing voters from contesting elections to Lok Sabha as well as assembly for up to five years after the court frames charges.

Sales of village goods topped Rs 50,000 crore during the last financial year. Khadi products notched up sales of Rs 2,005 crore, up 33% from Rs 1,635 crore in 2015-16, data collated by Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC) shows. A bumper demand was recorded for products such as honey, soaps, cosmetics and organic food items, which are produced by village industries and many of which are run by women.
Islamic preacher Zakir Naik’s aide has told the National Investigation Agency, he was given Rs 148.9 crore for safekeeping. Aamir Abdul Mannan Gazdar, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case against Naik and Islamic Research Foundation, said he was given the amount in cash by Naik’s manager Aslam Qureshi between August and October 2016. This was the time when Naik had already come on the security establishment’s radar for his hate speeches that allegedly incited youth to commit terror acts.
