Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim was sentenced to 10 years in prison for rape. The sentence was passed by a special CBI judge in a makeshift court in the Sunaria jail where Ram Rahim, 50, had been lodged since his conviction on Friday. The judge awarded the 10-year jail term after hearing arguments on the quantum of sentence by prosecution and defence lawyers. At least 38 people were killed and hundreds injured on Friday in Haryana and Punjab, which had seen widespread violence by his followers after his conviction on Friday.

China claimed that Indian troops have been pulled out from Sikkim’s Doklam. Beijing’s comments came after India put out a statement earlier in the day saying both countries are withdrawing their personnel. Chinese foreign ministry also said its troops will continue to patrol the border and added that is “pleased” that Indian troops have withdrawn. The standoff between Indian and Chinese troops at Doklam, at the tri-junction of India-China Bhutan, has been continuing since June 16 when Indian troops stopped a Chinese PLA unit from building a road in the area.

In Goa, where BJP retained power in the assembly earlier this year, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar won from Panaji with a margin of 4,803 votes while Health Minister Vishwajit Rane won the Valpoi seat with a margin of 10,066 votes.

200 Indian students have been marooned in University of Houston due to Hurricane Harvey. External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted that she had been informed by the Consulate General of India in Houston that efforts were being made to deliver food to them. Harvey, which made landfall late Friday as a Category 4 hurricane and has lingered dropping heavy rain as a tropical storm, sent devastating floods pouring into Houston on Sunday. India and Pakistan have been hit by spy malware, a cybersecurity firm said today. Symantec Corp, the digital security company said that it has identified a sustained cyber spying campaign, likely state-sponsored, against Indian and Pakistani entities involved in regional security issues. In a threat intelligence report that was sent to clients in July, the firm Symantec said the online espionage effort dated back to October 2016. The detailed report on the cyber spying comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region.
