The Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu today rejected the opposition notice for removal of chief justice Dipak Misra. The chairman rejected the Congress-led opposition parties’ notice saying that the notice lacked substantial merit. While rejecting the notice, Naidu cited a press conference the Congress held on the issue as being in breach of parliamentary customs and conventions and also in violation of Rajya Sabha norms. The Congress which had led the opposition move against the CJI slammed Naidu’s decision and said that it will move Supreme Court challenging the order. Read

The Centre revoked AFSPA from Meghalaya and reduced it to eight police stations in Arunachal Pradesh. AFSPA was totally withdrawn from all areas of Meghalaya from April 1. In Arunachal, it is down from 16 police stations to eight. However, the controversial act was extended by another six months in three eastern districts of the state– Tirap, Longding, and Changlang — which border Myanmar and other districts bordering Assam. The act was withdrawn in Tripura in 2015.
Prince William’s wife Kate Middleton gave birth to a boy today. This is the third child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and also the fifth in line to the British throne. The Kensington Palace, where the royal family resides, said the baby was born at 1001 GMT and weighs 8 lbs 7oz. Prince William was present for the birth at St Mary’s Hospital in west London where their other two children, George and Charlotte, were also born.

BJP state president BS Yeddyurappa announced today that his son would not be contesting from Varuna seat. The announcement of Yeddyurappa’s son B Y Vijayendra contesting election was projected as a battle between the sons of former and current chief ministers for Varuna assembly constituency in Mysuru. As Yeddyurappa left the stage after making the announcement, angry workers got on to the dais and damage furniture. The BJP has not so far officially announced any candidate for Varuna.
A six-year-old was raped, strangulated and left on a school campus in Odisha’s Cuttack district. The incident took place at Jagannathpur village and after the accused presumed her to be dead, he left her inside the campus. The girl had gone to purchase biscuits in her village but did not return after some time. Later, she was found lying unconscious and without clothes inside the school campus with blood oozing from her head and mouth.
