The Centre and states have decided to reduce goods and services tax rates on over 80 items. The list includes 29 goods and 53 services, finance minister Arun Jaitley told reporters after a meeting of the GST Council, which has all state finance ministers as members. The new rates will kick in from January 25. Both Central and state governments are also working to move towards a single-stage filing instead of the current three-stage form. Read more

A court has directed issuance of arrest warrant against defaulter businessman Vijay Mallya and 18 others in the Kingfisher Airlines case. The court has directed issuance of warrant on a complaint filed by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), a probe agency which comes under the corporate affairs ministry. Mallya, who has been based in the UK for a long time, is wanted in India for Kingfisher Airlines’ default on loans worth nearly Rs 9,000 crore and some other matters.
Pressure is mounting on the judiciary for live telecast of its proceedings on the lines of that done by Parliament and state assemblies. Senior advocate Indira Jaising yesterday mentioned a petition on the necessity of live telecast of court proceedings before a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, seeking early hearing. In her petition, Jaising said as the apex court judgments impacted every single citizen of India, it was necessary that those getting impacted by the top court’s decisions be aware of the manner in which such decisions were taken.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed chargesheet against 26/11 Mumbai attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed & Hizbul Mujahideen head Syed Salahuddin. Without naming them as accused in the chargesheet, NIA has also termed some senior Hurriyat leaders – Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Asiya Andrabi, Yasin Malik and Shabbir Shah, and two others – for leading stone-pelting mobs in the Kashmir Valley, and carrying out terror attacks and violence besides subversive activities on the directions of their “Pakistani handlers”, sources said.
Now, more homebuyers can get interest subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY). In a big relief to thousands of new home buyers, the housing ministry has extended coverage of interest subsidy under PM Awas Yojna (PMAY) to property falling under any part of a development authority and planning area, including rural areas, industrial belts and even rural pockets within special economic zones (SEZs). Home buyers can get the interest subsidy of around Rs 2.3 lakh.
