India’s U-17 World Cup squad will debut in the premier FIFA tournament today. The tournament will start in the evening with India taking on the US at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the national capital in their campaign opener. This is the first ever FIFA tournament in any age group to be held in India. Twenty-four nations are competing in the event, which is being held in New Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Kochi, Guwahati and Kolkata. Read

Sasikala was granted a five-day parole to meet her ailing husband. The AIADMK leader is serving a prison term in Bengaluru since February after the Supreme Court upheld her conviction by a special court in a disproportionate assets case. She had submitted an emergency parole form along with a medical certificate of her ailing husband M Natarajan. Natarajan, a 74-year-old chronic liver disease patient, was stable after a seven-and-a-half hour long kidney and liver transplant surgery that began late on Tuesday night.

Stealth frigate INS Trishul, thwarted a piracy attempt on ‘Jag Amar’ in a swift operation by deploying an armed helicopter and marine commandos in the Gulf of Aden. The 4,000-tonne INS Trishul swung into action after receiving the distress call from Indian-flagged cargo ship Jag Amar, which had 26 Indians on board.

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons won the Nobel Peace Prize. ICAN describes itself as a coalition of grassroots non-government groups in more than 100 nations. It began in Australia and was officially launched in Vienna in 2007. The Nobel Peace Prize, worth $1.10 million, will be presented in Oslo on December 10. The Nobel prize seeks to bolster the case of disarmament amid nuclear tensions between the United States and North Korea and uncertainty over the fate of a 2015 deal between Iran and major powers to limit Tehran’s nuclear programme.
An IAF Mi-17 V5 helicopter crashed near Tawang, killing seven people. Five of those killed were Indian Air Force personnel and two were Army officials. The helicopter reportedly crashed around 6 am Friday while it was on an air maintenance mission. A court of inquiry has been ordered. The chopper was flying in Tawang sector, bordering China. In June 2013, an Mi-17 V-5 helicopter had crashed attempting rescue operations during the Uttarakhand floods. As many as 20 people were killed in that accident.
